MARK SPIZ

Mark Andrew Spitz (* February 10, 1950 in Modesto, California) is an American swimmer who won seven gold medals at the 1972 Munich Olympics, breaking world record in each of his victories, becoming the first athlete in history Olympic Games to get the feat in a single edition (up to Beijing 2008, which was surpassed by fellow American swimmer Michael Phelps). Despite the success achieved with only 22 years decided to retire to work in real estate. It is considered one of the greatest Olympians of all time.
Thanks to his father Arnold, learned to swim two years while living in Hawaii. He studied at Indiana University.

History and stories the Munich 1972

The so-called Munich slaughter took place in the city of Munich in the state of Bavaria (Germany) on September 5, 1972, during the XX edition of the Summer Olympic Games. That day a command called Black September Palestinian terrorists took hostage eleven of the twenty members of the Israel Olympic team. The attack eventually led to the deaths of eleven Israeli athletes, five of the eight terrorists and one German police officer. The tragedy would be seen around the world through television.Surprisingly, the only Olympic competition was suspended for one day, September 5, despite different personalities asked for the suspension. The International Olympic Committee president, Avery Brundage, and other IOC members decided that the terrorists could not condition the celebration of the games. The next day was held at the Olympic Stadium for the dead, a memorial attended by 80,000 spectators and 3,000 athletes. Avery Brundage made ​​no reference to athletes killed during his speech, praising the strength of the Olympic movement. This angered the Israelis and many of the people present there.
As a sign of mourning, during the ceremony, the Olympic flag was hoisted at half mast, along with most of the national flags of the countries present at the games, except for the Arab countries, which demanded that their banners flying high the mast.
